What Is a Steel Grade?

Polad dərəcəsi və ya "Grade" nədir?

The EN 10025 European Standard is managed by the European Committee for Iron and Steel Standardization under the European Committee for Standardization.

According to the European standard, the quality of steel used in industry is classified using symbols such as S, 235, J2, K2, C, Z, W, JR, and J0.

The meanings of these symbols are explained below:

  • S – structural steel
  • 235 – indicates the minimum yield strength of the steel (tested at 16 mm)
  • J2, K2, JR, J0 – indicate the material toughness according to the “Charpy” impact or “V-notch” test methodology

Classification according to European standards is not considered a universal international classification. Different countries and regions have their own standards which may have the same chemical and mechanical properties as European standards but differ in dimensions and specifications.

For example:

  • US standard – ASTM
  • German standard – DIN
  • Russian standard – GOST
